Mom Has to Poop: What it's all about

Mom Has to Poop is both a book and a statement about motherhood: moms have basic needs just like babies do. Mom Has to Poop is also about shedding light on the parts of being a parent that we don’t often talk about, whether it’s literal poop or all the poopy moments.

The inspiration for the book came from my first months with my baby as I found myself scraping oatmeal off her head while nursing, assuring her I would return from the washroom, and feeling so overwhelmed to the point of tears. Being a mom is hard. Trying to read a book about barn yard animals to a newborn that can’t even stay awake for the whole thing wasn’t making it any easier.

I wanted a book that was written for me and captured the reality of being a new mom. A book that I would want to read to my baby, even if she fell asleep. A book with beautiful and colourful artwork we would both enjoy looking at time and time again.

Faced with a newborn baby and a global pandemic, it felt like there wasn’t much in my control. Everything I thought I’d be doing during my maternity leave wasn’t possible: baby & me classes, playdates, visits with family, or just sitting in a cafe with a warm tea. It felt like the world was both on pause and racing forwards at the same time.

Creating Mom Has to Poop has connected me with the outside world and given me a sense of control over the chaos. It has been a big learning experience and I am excited about working hard to share my message with other moms: we do so much for our babies and we need to eat, sleep, cuddle, and poop, too.

Now that the book is here, I am thinking up more ways to continue the conversation and support new moms. Part of that is starting this blog, and providing a platform for moms to share the poopy side of motherhood. Thank you for joining me on this journey and stay tuned for more to come!
